I like to use small combo amps for recording because they are easy to overdrive without clipping the mic, which means the mic can be a little closer. Whatever you use do you like the sound? Have you worked the knobs to your tastes? If the answer to both is "yes" proceed to amp.
I find that you can get quite a bit out of a good distortion pedal. Do you like it's sound? Have you worked it's EQ and pickup selections to your tastes? If the answer to both is "yes" proceed to effects (if any). Radiohead doesn't even always have the same sound. There are more than a million different ways to get a guitar sound.
